The drama of the miners’ strike in pictures and film
Thursday December 3 at 6pm
A World to Win invites you to a screening of dramatic photographs from the 1984-5 miners’ strike for jobs at the Northern College, Stainborough, near Barnsley, on Thursday December 3 at 6pm.
Ex-miner Paul Winter will also show his six minute film The year we saw the light.
The show will be followed by a discussion on the significance of the strike 25 years on, as the economy implodes and millions face the dole and poverty.
The 130 pictures that make up the presentation were taken during the whole period of the strike, mainly in Yorkshire. They show the anger, bitterness and heroism of the miners and the women of the coalfields as the state mounted its offensive against the NUM and the police poured into the coalfields.
Many of the pictures are in a recent book, Unfinished Business: The miners strike for jobs 1984-5, published by A World to Win; some have never been seen before while others featured in the News Line book The Miners’ Strike 1984-5 – in pictures. The photographers who took the pictures will make the presentation and copies of the book will be available at a special price.
Former miners and those in the coalfield communities are welcome to attend.
