Your chance to make history
On this day 50 years ago, the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States launched its abortive attack on the Cuban revolution with an invasion force that landed at the island’s Bay of Pigs. Local people took up arms and held off the invaders until reinforcements arrived. Within three days, Fidel Castro’s forces declared victory while in Washington, John Kennedy licked his wounds.
Today, on the anniversary of the Bay of Pigs fiasco, Barack Obama, Nicolas Sarkozy and David Cameron have come clean and called for regime change in Libya, even though the United Nations resolution authorising intervention rules that objective out. They say in a letter published in The Times and other papers that "it is impossible to imagine a future for Libya with Gaddafi in power".
