Plans to give European police agency more powers
In January 2002 Statewatch published a detailed report on the activities and development of Europol, the European Police Office. The report considered the expansion of Europol’s mandate and powers, questioned its effectiveness and examined judicial and democratic controls and the decision-making process within the EU.2 Statewatch’s concerns were reflected in the report’s subtitle: “towards an unaccountable “FBI” in Europe”. During 2006 the EU has been holding an internal “debate” on the “future of Europol”.
The EU is currently discussing the future of Europol - the European Police Office - but is ignoring critical issues in favour of giving the agency more powers and a more "flexible" legal framework, says a Statewatch analysis by Ben Hayes.
