Candlelight vigil at Wandsworth Prison in support of Julian Assange & Wikileaks

Assange14 December 2010

Protesters outside Wandsworth gaol last night in support of Julian Assange. The Wikileaks founder is appealing for bail today at Westminster magistrates court, Horseferry Road, SW1 where supporters will gather from 1pm. Assange faces possible extradition to Sweden on rape accusations. This could lead to extradition to the USA on espionage charges.

His lawyers claim that Swedish prosecutors have been put under political pressure to silence the former hacker. His first bail attempt was turned down despite backers John Pilger, Jemima Khan and Ken Loach offering £180,000 as surety.

Katrin Axelsson of Women Against Rape sent a letter to the Guardian questioning the unusual zeal in pursuing Julian Assange for rape allegations.
